Lung Cancer Screening Mobile Unit

The OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center Mobile Lung Cancer Screening Program brings lung cancer screening to communities across Oklahoma. Our goal is to make it easier for people to get screened for lung cancer.

Lung cancer screening can help find cancer early, when it is easier to treat. The screening uses a quick, simple, low-dose CT scan. Many people who qualify for this screening have not had it yet.

In Oklahoma, not enough people are getting screened for lung cancer. As a result, many people are diagnosed after the cancer has already spread and is harder to treat. The mobile screening unit travels across the state with advanced imaging equipment, making it easier for people to access screening close to home, especially in communities with limited access to health care.

Who is Eligible for Lung Cancer Screening?

Lung cancer screening is for people who currently smoke or used to smoke cigarettes or other combustible tobacco products. Combustible tobacco products are tobacco products that are burned and inhaled, such as cigarettes, cigars and pipes. People who have only used e-cigarettes, vaping products or smokeless tobacco do not qualify for lung cancer screening based on current screening guidelines.

• Age 50-80
• Cigarette smoking history of 20 pack-years (number of years smoked multiplied by number of packs smoked per day)
• Smoked within the past 15 years

Patients should be prepared to provide a detailed cigarette smoking and health history.

Types of Mobile Screening Events

You may choose to host one of the two types of mobile screening events that we offer, which include:

• Organized by your group and limited to your patients or employees
• Open to the public, allowing anyone to schedule attendance

If you are a healthcare organization hosting the event, you may choose to conduct Shared Decision-Making appointments or have OU Health host them via telehealth for your patients. View this information packet to learn more about these type of events.

Fees

No fees are associated with hosting a screening event. There may be fees associated with individual screenings.

Scheduling Your Event

Please schedule new events at least three months ahead and returning events at least two months ahead. This gives us enough time to coordinate details and promote the event.

Event & Logistics

• Appointments begin as early as 7:30 a.m. and are scheduled in 15–20-minute increments
• The last appointment is at 3:30 p.m.
• Weekend events are reviewed and approved as needed, depending on staffing
• The mobile unit travels with a generator and does not require a power source from the event location

Accessibility

• There is limited accessibility, as the mobile unit does not have a ramp. Individuals must be able to walk up three steps
• The individual weight limit is 400 pounds
• There is no restroom on the mobile unit
• If Shared Decision-Making is conducted on-site, access to indoor space is required

Where the Mobile Unit Can Park

• A flat, paved surface is required
• No tree branches, electrical wires, or low power lines
• The mobile unit is 40x8 feet
• Sharp turns cannot be accommodated
• The driver reserves the right to adjust the parking position for feasibility and safety
