Pediatric Rheumatology for Referring Physicians

Please note that due to a critical pediatric rheumatologist shortage in this state, we cannot accommodate all referrals or any self-referrals. To triage and prioritize urgent cases effectively, we require the following information before scheduling your patient.

How to Send a Referral

Please fax your complete referral to (405) 271-1154, Attention: Pediatric Rheumatology. Referrals cannot be processed or scheduled until all items are received.

Pediatric Rheumatology Referral Checklist

To expedite review and scheduling, please send the following documentation:

  • Recent notes describing the primary concern/reason for referral to rheumatology
  • Documentation of physical exam findings
  • Relevant labs (CBC, CMP, ESR/CRP, urinalysis, and any other pertinent studies) from the past 6–12 months
  • Imaging reports, if performed (X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, etc.)

Our triage process depends on these details to determine:

  • The urgency of the referral
  • Whether the concern is most appropriately managed by pediatric rheumatology, or
  • If alternative evaluation or management should be pursued first.

The following conditions do not require a pediatric rheumatologist for diagnosis or management and cannot be scheduled for evaluation by Oklahoma Children's Pediatric Rheumatology at this time.

  • Hypermobility/Ehlers-Danlos Spectrum Disorders
  • AMPS/RSD/CRPS/Fibromyalgia/Other Primary Pain Syndrome
  • PANS/PANDAS
  • Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)
  • Low positive ANA in the absence of more specific laboratory or physical exam findings
  • Family History of autoimmune disease
