About Steven Carter

Steven N. Carter, MD, FACS, FASCRS, is a assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He is board-certified in Colon and Rectal Surgery, as well as General Surgery.

Dr. Carter moved to Lawton when he was three and graduated from Lawton – Eisenhower. He then attended the University of Oklahoma graduating Summa Cum Laude. He then pursued a medical degree followed by a general surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

He was one of the first to leave OU and pursue advanced training in colon and rectal surgery. He saw how many people in this area were undergoing surgeries by general surgeons who only perform a few of these cases a year. This was radically different than the patient experiences in other metropolitan areas. He competed the Colon and Rectal Residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Following that training, he went in to practice at OU Health. He quickly adopted robotic surgery to assist with the difficult anatomy of the pelvis in rectal cancer surgeries.

Dr. Carter is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and a member of the American Medical Association. He is an Instructor for Advanced Trauma Courses and volunteers his time to prepare general surgery residents for oral boards. He also participates with support groups for ostomy patients and colitis patients. His areas of interest include rectal cancer, anorectal disease (hemorrhoids, pilonidal disease, etc.) and inflammatory bowel disease. He is one of the few physicians in OKC trained in ileoanal anastomosis (i.e. J-pouch).

Dr. Carter is very talented and seems genuinely concerned about my care. It would be helpful to have more information about the specific condition and treatments.

Again, they never showed up for the call so I never spoke to the doctor, nurse, or anyone. I sent a message in my chart but no response as of yet.
