About Miguel Cruz-Pimentel

Luis A. Cruz-Pimentel, MD, is a retina specialist at OU Health Dean McGee Eye Institute with expertise in medical and surgical retina, pediatric vitreoretinal surgery, and ocular genetics. He cares for adults and children with a wide range of retinal conditions and has a special interest in complex retinal diseases, inherited retinal disorders, and advanced vitreoretinal surgery.

Dr. Cruz-Pimentel's passion for ophthalmology began while volunteering in underserved communities in his native Dominican Republic, where he helped address vitamin A deficiency, a leading cause of preventable blindness.

He earned his medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra and completed his ophthalmology residency at the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo, where he served as chief resident. He subsequently completed a medical and surgical retina fellowship at the same institution.

To further advance his expertise, Dr. Cruz-Pimentel pursued extensive fellowship training in Canada, completing fellowships in medical retina, vitreoretinal surgery, pediatric vitreoretinal surgery, ocular genetics and inherited retinal diseases, and vitreoretinal surgery research through the University of Toronto and The Hospital for Sick Children. During this training, he participated as a surgeon in the delivery of gene therapy treatments for inherited retinal diseases.

An accomplished clinician-scientist, Dr. Cruz-Pimentel has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters focused on retinal diseases and surgical techniques. His research interests include translational medicine and the treatment of complex retinal diseases in both adults and children. He is committed to combining innovative therapies with compassionate, patient-centered care.

His clinical excellence has been recognized through honors including the Gillingham Fellowship from the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology and Retina Research Foundation, as well as the Lim Family Memorial Award from the University of Toronto for excellence in clinical care, surgical skill, and mentorship.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Cruz-Pimentel enjoys spending time with his family, reading history books, watching movies, and participating in racquet and outdoor sports.
