About Michael Steiner

Michael J. Steiner, MD, MPH, is a pediatrician and nationally recognized physician leader who practices in Oklahoma City, where he serves as chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and physician‑in‑chief of Oklahoma Children’s OU Health. His clinical background is rooted in general pediatrics, with a career‑long focus on improving care delivery for children, particularly those with complex medical needs.

In his current role, Dr. Steiner leads the clinical, research and education missions for pediatrics across the state’s only academic health system, advancing access to high‑quality pediatric care throughout Oklahoma and the region.

Dr. Steiner earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and later earned a Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed a combined internal medicine–pediatrics residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also served as a chief resident in pediatrics. Following residency, he practiced primary care through the National Health Service Corps in Lake Isabella, California, and subsequently joined Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the University of Southern California, where he completed fellowship training in Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND).

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Steiner is a seasoned academic and health system leader with decades of experience in faculty development, pediatric workforce expansion and community outreach. Prior to joining OU Health, he held multiple senior leadership roles at the University of North Carolina, including executive vice chair of pediatrics and pediatrician‑in‑chief of UNC Children’s Hospital. In a message to faculty and learners, Dr. Steiner has emphasized his commitment to collaboration, advocacy and building a world‑class children’s hospital that improves child health statewide while serving as a welcoming professional home for clinicians, researchers and trainees.
