About Maria del Carmen Trapp
Maria del Carmen Trapp, PhD, is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She is a licensed health psychologist with extensive experience in behavioral health, bariatric psychology, and integrated care. Her clinical interests include the psychological aspects of bariatric surgery, mental health screening, and treatment for complex psychiatric conditions such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and eating disorders.
She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology with an emphasis in Counseling Psychology from the University of Oklahoma. She also completed a Master of Education in Community Counseling from the same institution. Her undergraduate studies were completed at California State University, where she earned dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and Theater Arts. Her clinical training included internships at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Trapp serves in multiple academic and advisory roles, including mentoring medical students and participating in curriculum development committees. She is actively involved in professional organizations such as the American Psychological Association and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Her public service includes leadership roles with the Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women and coordination of community health initiatives like the Walk from Obesity.
