Free Summer Meals for Kids Strengthen Community Health with Oklahoma Children’s OU Health and Sodexo

As part of its commitment to improving the health and well-being of children across Oklahoma, Oklahoma Children’s OU Health, in collaboration with Sodexo, will participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), providing free weekday lunches for children throughout the summer months.

Meals will be available May 27 through August 7 for children and teens 18 years of age and younger, helping ensure continued access to nutritious meals while school cafeterias are closed for summer break.

As the state’s only academic, comprehensive children’s hospital, Oklahoma Children’s delivers specialized care to children in all 77 counties. Participation in programs like SFSP reflects the hospital’s broader mission to support the health of children not only inside the hospital walls, but throughout the communities it serves.

Access to nutritious food is one of the most fundamental needs for a child’s growth and well-being,” said Oklahoma Children’s OU Health Physician in Chief Dr. Michael Steiner, M.D., MPH, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. “Programs like the Summer Food Service Program reflect our commitment to supporting children not only through the care we provide, but by partnering with the community to ensure families have the resources they need to thrive — especially during the summer months when other supports are less available.

SFSP, administered nationally by the USDA, helps bridge the nutrition gap many children face when school is not in session. Meals are provided at no cost and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
