Julie Allen, PhD, MPH

  • Position: Assistant Professor of Health Promotions, Diabetes Research Member

Biography

My research program seeks to better understand and intervene upon mechanisms of chronic disease disparities among older U.S. adults. I focus on relationships between exposure to chronic stressors rooted in social inequities over the life course and psychosocial, biological, & behavioral determinants of health. My research to date has focused on Black-White health disparities and outcomes such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, cancers, and multimorbidity. The underlying motivation for this work is to develop innovative, evidence-based interventions to reduce chronic disease disparities among older adults, such as my current collaboration with the Greater Richmond YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program.
