About Gregory Skuta
Gregory L. Skuta, MD, is a glaucoma specialist at OU Health Dean McGee Eye Institute and serves as the David W. Parke II, MD Professor, Regents’ Professor, and Vice Chair for Faculty Development and External Relations in the University of Oklahoma Department of Ophthalmology. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, with particular interests in glaucoma filtering surgery, wound healing, and clinical research.
A native of Illinois, Dr. Skuta earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, followed by a glaucoma fellowship at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami.
Dr. Skuta joined Dean McGee Eye Institute in 1992 and served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the institute and Chair of the OU Department of Ophthalmology from 2009 to 2021. Throughout his career, he has been a leader in advancing glaucoma care, ophthalmic education, and clinical research.
An internationally recognized expert in glaucoma, Dr. Skuta has authored more than 120 publications and lectured at hundreds of professional meetings worldwide. He has served in numerous leadership roles within organized ophthalmology, including President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and President of the American Glaucoma Society. He has also participated as an investigator in National Eye Institute-sponsored clinical trials.
Dr. Skuta has received numerous honors throughout his career, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology Life Achievement Honor Award, the American Glaucoma Society President’s Award, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Wisconsin Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He has also been recognized among Castle Connolly Top Doctors, Best Doctors in America, and Top Doctors of the 405.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Skuta enjoys music, travel, American presidential history, and cinema. He and his wife, Anne, have three children and three grandchildren.
