About Andrew Melson

Andrew Melson, MD, is the James P. Luton Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology, a clinical associate professor and residency program director at OU Health Dean McGee Eye Institute. He specializes in neuro-ophthalmology, comprehensive ophthalmology and cataract surgery, including advanced and premium intraocular lens procedures. He also provides surgical management for adult strabismus.

Dr. Melson earned his Doctor of Medicine from Saint Louis University, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He completed his internship at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, followed by his ophthalmology residency at the Dean McGee Eye Institute at the University of Oklahoma, where he served as chief resident. He then completed a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at Dean McGee Eye Institute before joining the faculty.

In his clinical practice, Dr. Melson treats a wide range of neuro-ophthalmic and ophthalmic conditions and performs procedures including adult strabismus surgery, optic nerve sheath fenestration and cataract surgery. He is actively involved in research and education, with numerous publications and national teaching engagements, particularly in cataract surgery education for residents.

He has received multiple honors for his excellence in teaching and patient care, including the Dr. and Mrs. T.E. Acers Resident Honor Award, Annie Moreau Fellowship Teaching Award, M. Dwayne Andrews, MD Excellence in Teaching Award and the Edward and Thelma Gaylord Faculty Honor Award.

Outside of work, Dr. Melson enjoys spending time with his wife, Danielle, a physical therapist, and their two children.
