OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center Collaborates with the Consulate General of Mexico for their 23rd Annual Binational Health Week

OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences is proud to announce its collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico in Oklahoma City for their 23rd annual Binational Health Week. Binational Health Week represents a joint effort between community organizations, federal and state agencies and volunteers, whose goal is to improve the health and well-being of the Latin American population in the United States. This annual event is celebrated in all 50 states.

Despite its name, the programming for Binational Health Week will take place throughout the month of October and will feature a series of workshops, vaccination campaigns and medical examinations to promote health and facilitate access to medical services available in the community. Stephenson Cancer Center will aid in these efforts by organizing and promoting participation in preventative events, and facilitating vaccinations, screenings, and medical exams for various diseases.

"We recognize that access to healthcare is a universal right that extends to both nationals and foreigners, irrespective of their demographic or socioeconomic background," said Carla Ponce, Bilingual Community Outreach Coordinator at the Stephenson Cancer Center. "We take pride in partnering with the Mexican consulate during the twenty-third edition of Binational Health Week to offer our compatriots and Latinos, in general, essential knowledge across various health domains. This knowledge empowers them to make informed decisions to enhance their own and their families' well-being. Events like this emphasize the importance of nurturing a culture centered on preventive measures and assisting individuals in challenging circumstances who are in greater need of access to medical services than ever before.”

According to the Consulate General of Mexico, Binational Health Week is a coordinated and comprehensive medical care effort held in conjunction with all the Consular Representations of Mexico in the Unites States and its health network and external allies, emphasizing the importance of a healthy lifestyle and a preventative culture.

Stephenson Cancer Center recognizes the need to serve the ever-growing Latin American population in Oklahoma City and is pleased to be able to support both the 23rd Binational Health Week and the Consulate General of Mexico, whose Oklahoma City office opened in May 2023.
