Dear Stephenson Cancer Center Community:
The new viral infection, COVID-19, is present in Oklahoma and cases are being confirmed in growing numbers.
The simple measures that follow represent the best practices to help you avoid infection:
- Avoid anyone who may be ill.
- Limit exposure to all children under 18 years of age. We know that children may be contagious even while showing no symptoms of the virus.
- Wash hands frequently for a minimum of 20 seconds using soap and water. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer is appropriate for use if soap and water are not available.
- If you think you may have been in contact with a person suspected or known to have COVID-19, or if you are ill, notify your care team before visiting the hospital or clinic, and wear a mask upon arrival.
- Avoid touching your face, especially eyes, nose and/or mouth.
- Stay home as much as possible. If you must go out, avoid crowds and try to keep a distance of at least six feet from other people.
- Avoid travel out of the area, especially in identified high-risk locations.
- Ask your provider to authorize extra necessary medications should you need to stay home for a prolonged period during the peak outbreak. If you cannot obtain extra medications, consider mail-order options.
- Be sure you have over-the-counter medicines and any supplies needed to treat fever and other symptoms.
- Have enough household items and groceries on hand in the event you must stay home for an extended period. Plan to have food delivered to you through friends, family members or delivery services.
- To the extent possible, avoid contact with high-touch surfaces in public places – elevator buttons, doors, door handles and handrails, among others. If you must touch a surface, use a tissue, paper towel or sleeve to cover your hand, and wash your hands right away.
- Clean and disinfect your home to remove germs from frequently touched surfaces, such as tables, countertops, door knobs, light switches, handles, desks, bathroom fixtures, faucets, sinks and cell phones.
- Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough and shortness of breath. If you observe what may be early symptoms, call the cancer center at 405-271-1112. Call 911 if you experience severe symptoms, including difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure, bluish lips or face, or if you experience confusion or unresponsiveness.
As a cancer patient, you have overcome many challenges. While COVID-19 may present new challenges, your care team is prepared to support you as needed. Information about the virus is constantly changing. We will provide updated information as needed to help you and your family stay healthy throughout the pandemic.
