This week, The Children’s Hospital welcomed another Sooner Born baby, with the arrival of Bennett Bear Grimes, and weighing in at six pounds and 14 ounces. As an OU Health Sooner Born baby, Bennett received a “special edition” Sooner Born birth certificate and a crimson Sooner Born beanie, which proudly establishes his Sooner loyalty, and also warms his tiny head.
Bennett’s parents, Drs. Sarah and Arthur Grimes, are both completing residencies at the OU College of Medicine. Bennett’s mom practices in obstetrics and gynecology, and his dad is a general surgeon. Bennett is also the first grandchild in the family.
Originally from Louisiana, the couple met as med students, married and made Oklahoma their home four years ago. The self-confessed Louisiana State University Tiger fans said they feel very much at home and have taken quite a liking to the Sooners and the Sooner State. “It’s easy to be a Sooner fan, although it got a bit more complicated this year,” he said, with a reference to the recent LSU victory over OU in this year’s Peach Bowl match-up.
Thanks to a couples’ match for residency training, these Tiger transplants are evolving to become true Sooners. While they can’t say exactly where their careers will take them, they are here for the immediate future as Arthur Grimes completes a surgical fellowship program.
Any infant born at The Children’s Hospital may participate in the Sooner Born program. Families receive information and instructions regarding sign-up as part of the registration process.
