Oklahoma Health News | The Safety and Importance of Routine Dental Care

Routine dental checkups are vital to your overall health. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might have concerns about visiting your dentist. Rest assured, that exam chair is one of the safest places you can be, said Raymond Cohlmia, DDS, President and Chair of OU Health Dentistry and Dean of the College of Dentistry. Dr. Cohlmia discussed the safety and importance of routine dental care with OU Health Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Jennifer Schultz.

“It’s extremely safe to go to the dentist and we have the research that backs that up,” Cohlmia said.

Research conducted by the American Dental Association Science & Research Institute showed that COVID-19 transmission is nearly undetectable in dentist’s offices. Dentists have robust personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection control standards and had strict protocols in place even prior to the pandemic.

OU Health dentists know that the health of your mouth is integrally tied to the health of your body, and for this reason, it’s important to keep up with your dental exams as well as dental hygiene such as flossing brushing regularly.
